Conquering Chronic Pain – Treating You Well

Treating You Well

Introduction

To those suffering with chronic pain,

I know you’re in pain. I know that your family wants you to be well again, even if they don’t understand what’s going on with your body. I know that YOU want to be well and pain-free again. I know you feel frustrated by not being able to do what you love. You may have been told surgery is the only option for your condition or diagnosis. You may have been told that chronic pain is just a side effect of getting older.

You may have been judged as being a drug seeker because you’re trying to find an effective way to manage your pain. You may have been told that “there’s nothing more we can do for you” and were sent home with pain medications and no hope for a better future…

I know that you’re in chronic pain.

I know that you’re in pain. I know because I have been there too – I lived in CHRONIC pain for 6 years as a teen.

Pain is a symptom—a signal that something is wrong with your body. Pain can be caused by many things, including:

  • A lack of movement (sedentary lifestyle)
  • A lack of sleep (insufficient sleep)
  • Stress management — your fight-or-flight response has been triggered without cause (stress)
  • Lack of nutrition—eating poorly or not eating enough

I know that this is keeping you from living the life you want to live.

I know that these pains are keeping you from living the life you want to live.

I know how hard it is to live with chronic pain, pain that doesn’t go away and even gets worse over time. I know because I have lived with this type of pain myself.

And along with the rest of your loved ones, I want to help you get your life back on track so that you can enjoy being fully alive again!

I know that your family wants you to be well again, even if they don’t understand what’s going on with your body.

I know that your family wants you to be well again, even if they don’t understand what’s going on with your body. They may not know how to help or what to say. It’s okay if they don’t get it! In all honesty, most people just don’t know what to say to someone who’s hurting, especially when it’s been going on for a long time. Your relationship with your family members can grow stronger when they try to understand and support you through this time, but just know that they might be struggling with words and are probably feeling discouraged and unable to help you.

If someone close to you is struggling with a chronic illness, please consider these 5 simple tips:

  1. You don’t have to have all the answers. In fact, it’s perfectly logical that you wouldn’t have all the answers, so give yourself a break first. Your friend or loved one needs you there with them, not fixing them.
  2. Let them vent their frustrations. We all need a chance to get the feelings off our chest.
  3. Avoid accidentally gaslighting by not “one-upping” them or telling them about someone else who has it worse. They’re trying to share a moment with you and they’re trusting you. Just be there with them.
  4. Once they’ve gotten their feelings out, help them focus on the positive, what they can still do!
  5. Schedule something easy and fun. That could be as simple as just going shopping, meeting them for lunch, or coming over to sit on the porch and shoot the breeze.

I know that YOU want to be well and pain-free again.

To those that are in pain, my message is this:

I know that you want to be well and pain-free again.

I know you want to feel better.

I know you want to be able to live your life again.

I know you want to be able to enjoy your family again.

You may have been told surgery is the only option for your condition or diagnosis.

You may have been told surgery is the only option for your condition or diagnosis. But, many of the things we treat are treatable without surgery. Surgery should always be a last resort after all other options have been tried and proven unsuccessful, as it’s not always the best choice for you.

Surgery isn’t always necessary because it can be costly, painful, and time-consuming—and recovery from surgery can be long-lasting and difficult to deal with on your own (especially if you don’t have good insurance coverage). Surgery also isn’t always effective in treating certain conditions; in some cases, it may even make things worse by creating more pain or discomfort than before!

The bottom line? If there’s another treatment available that could help manage your condition without putting yourself under the knife—and save yourself some money while doing so—then why wouldn’t you want to give that a shot instead? Chronic pain can be treated.

You may have been told that chronic pain is just a side effect of getting older.

You’ve probably been told that pain is a natural part of getting older. But it’s not. Pain is a symptom of something else (it’s actually one of the last and most severe symptoms of dysfunction) and it’s important to talk about what’s causing your pain as well as how to treat it effectively.

Pain, or chronic pain, isn’t normal, nor is it inevitable with age: The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) guidelines say that if you’re experiencing moderate or severe pain, you should see a doctor immediately—even if your symptoms are related to an ongoing condition like arthritis or cancer.

You may have been judged as being a drug seeker because you’re trying to find an effective way to manage your pain.

You may have been judged as being a drug seeker because you’re trying to find an effective way to manage your pain. Drug seeking behavior is very common and not a reflection on the patient. We see it as a symptom of the pain and not the cause.

This is understandable, since it can be difficult to differentiate between real symptoms and drug seeking behavior when you are in pain yourself. Sometimes other doctors aren’t able to fully understand what it’s like living with chronic pain unless he or she has experienced it themselves. That’s why we have developed strategies for treating patients who seek drugs excessively, so they don’t get stuck in that pattern forever.

You may have been told that “there’s nothing more we can do for you” and were sent home with pain medications and no hope for a better future.

You are not alone.

We have helped so many people just like you.

There’s more we can do for you.

You may have already spent hundreds, even thousands of dollars trying to find answers for your problem, only to end up more ill than before and out of pocket.

You may have already spent hundreds, even thousands of dollars trying to find answers for your problem, only to end up more ill than before and out of pocket. You might be wondering if trying to treat yourself is worth it. I’m sure you’ve heard about people who have tried alternative remedies before and ended up in worse shape than ever before. So why would you risk the same fate?

I’m here for you and want to work with you not just treat you

First, I want to say that I’m here for you. I want to help you get better. There are no judgements here. We’re just going to work together and get your life back again. You don’t have to go through the pain or struggle anymore—I’m here for you!

Conclusion

It’s time to take control of your health, and I want to help you do that. I know it can be hard to find someone who understands what you’re going through and is willing to listen with open ears. But I’m here for you; I’m willing to work with you not just treat you like a number.

“Taking Control” can seem like a big scary thing, so let’s break it down to just the next step:

At Advocate Wellness we start with a Consult and Exam. Our goal is to find out what’s most important to you and then see if it’s something that we can help with. If at the end of the consult Dr. Nelson feels like we can help you then we’ll proceed to a paid exam. If at the end of the exam he is still confident that we can help you then he’ll provide his expert recommendations. Once in agreement, treatment can almost always start the same day unless we need an MRI or X-rays.

Don’t wait.
